Sinclair Broadcast Group Inc. has agreed to buy the stock of New York-based Bonten Media Group Holdings for $240 million, the Hunt Valley-based broadcaster announced Friday.
Bonten owns 14 television stations in eight markets, which reach about 1 percent of the TV households in the United States. The broadcaster also operates four stations through "joint sales agreements" with Esteem Broadcasting and those stations will be acquired by Sinclair-owned Cunningham Broadcasting.
The Bonten and Esteem stations being acquired include NBC, ABC, Fox, CW, UNI and MNT affiliates in eight television markets in California, Montana, North Carolina, Tennessee, Texas and Virginia.
ADVERTISINGThe acquisition will help Sinclair expand its regional presence in several states where it already owns stations, said Chris Ripley, Sinclair president and CEO, in Friday's announcement. Sinclair owns, operates or offers service to 173 television stations in 81 markets.
"We believe our economies of scale help us bring improvements to small market stations, including investments in news, other quality local programming and multicast opportunities with our emerging networks of Comet, Charge! And TBD," Ripley said.
FCC clears way for big TV mergers, eases broadband price limitsSinclair expects to close the sale, using cash on hand, in the third quarter of this year. The deal is subject Federal Communications Commission approval and antitrust clearance.
Sinclair announced the deal a day after the FCC relaxed broadcast ownership rules, a move expected to pave the way for television industry consolidation. Bloomberg News has reported that Sinclair is preparing to buy Tribune Media, which would bring together two of the nation's largest television station owners. (Tribune is the former owner of The Baltimore Sun and owns the newspaper's Mount Vernon office building.)
The FCC voted Thursday to reinstate the so-called UHF discount. The discount allows stations broadcasting on those higher-frequency airwaves to count only half their audience against a cap allowing a single company to own stations reaching no more than 39 percent of the nation's television households.
Without the UHF discount, Sinclair had an audience reach of about 38 percent. With it reinstated, and including the Bonten stations, it would have an estimated 25 percent reach, said Marci Ryvicker, a senior analyst with Wells Fargo Securities.
"We do not believe this precludes other deals large or small," Ryvicker said in a report Friday. "We view this transaction as a ''drop in the bucket'' for [Sinclair.] It by no means precludes other deals from happening large or small as [Sinclair] clearly still has plenty of ... financial room."
Ryvicker said she expects future acquisitions to help boost Sinclair's free cash flow and stock price.
Sinclair shares were down 2 cents, trading at $40.32 in the late morning Friday.

"Singapore is now more accessible than ever with United's nonstop flight, and its rapid progress as an innovative and forward-looking destination will leave visitors inspired by the possibilities of what's to come.

Since March, the airline has added new nonstop service from the hub to Tel Aviv and Xi'an China and will also begin new service to Auckland, New Zealand, and Hangzhou, China, in July.
Singapore Schedule Changes
With the launch of nonstop San Francisco - Singapore service, United will end its service between Singapore and Tokyo/Narita effective June 2, 2016 (eastbound). However, United customers in Singapore may continue to choose to fly to Tokyo/Narita by using daily flights on ANA, United's trans-Pacific joint venture partner, and to make connections at Narita to many cities in the United States on multiple flights operated both by United and ANA. United will maintain its daily service between Singapore and Hong Kong.
Boeing 787 Dreamliner
The 787 Dreamliner is revolutionizing the flying experience for United customers and crews while delivering unprecedented operating efficiency, comfort and lower emissions. Customers have expressed a preference for the 787 versus other aircraft, given its greater comfort with improved lighting, bigger windows, larger overhead bins, lower cabin altitude and enhanced ventilation systems, among other passenger-friendly features. The aircraft's use of lightweight composites, together with its modern engines and improved aerodynamic design, allow it to fly farther, faster and more efficiently than similar-sized conventional aircraft.

(Jingletown,CA) - HTVN: Lyft, a privately held American transportation network company (TNC) based in San Francisco. The company's mobile-phone application facilitates peer-to-peer ridesharing by connecting passengers who need a ride with drivers who have a car. Lyft around the bay area seems to be the hip thing this year. So we decided to see just how easy it would be to become a Lyft driver and document what type of things are needed for the job and the steps needed to get the job. Here is our documentation of our Lyft journey to employment. On Wednesday January 6th, we went over to AAA to get our new registration for 2016 and obtain our new tags. Thursday January 7th, we resumed our already in progress application for Lyft. When we downloaded the app and put in our Facebook information, Lyft remembered who we were and that we had not completed the application in full. The app prompted up to resume and so we did. We clicked on Become a Driver and it then prompted up to upload our current insurance paperwork. The app now says Pending Insurance. It then went on to ask me if I was ready to meet my mentor. We said yes and set up the appointment for today, Saturday January, 9th at 1:00 pm. At this point we are suppose to wait for an email confirmation about the mentor car check. More later today....... OK - It's 1:00pm. No sign of Lyft Mentor and no phone call. So we scheduled another appointment at 4pm today. Here is the instructions we were given: Mentor Session requested for 4:00 PM on Saturday, 1/9/2016 at XXX XXXXXX AVENUE, OAKLAND, CA 9XXXX. We’ll email you once your Mentor accepts your request. Or, if your suggestion doesn’t quite work, they’ll contact you (normally from a local area code) to adjust it. We will keep you posted! HTVN
